The Army Cadet Force (ACF) is 150 years old and is a national voluntary youth movement which aims to provide opportunities for young people to build their personal skills and self confidence so that they become responsible and caring citizens. With the motto ‘To inspire to Achieve’ the ACF gives young people (aged 12 to 18) marvellous opportunities: to sleep out under the stars and cook their own meals - after finding their way over unknown countryside; to take part in canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, overseas expeditions; target shooting, football, athletics, cross country, swimming; to become proficient in map reading, first aid, fieldcraft, radios and weapon handling; and to gain DofE awards and study for BTEC qualifications. Army Cadets also get involved with local activities. They parade in their uniforms with pride on Remembrance Day and help with local community projects. The highlight of Cadet training is annual camp. This is a two-week adventure where Army Cadets practise fieldcraft and have fun with other detachments from all over the county. There are four ACF Sectors in London with over 100 detachments looked after by over 30 Permanent Support Staff and dozens of Adult Instructors
