Combined Cadet Force

Some schools have a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) - with at least two wings from the Army, Navy or Air Force. Some may also have a band. CCFs give pupils a chance to show their teachers another side of their characters, to think for themselves and to demonstrate their practical skills by taking part in weapons training, flying, sailing, camps, community activities and much more.

CCFs historically have only been open to the pupils of the school they are based in with most of the Adult Instructors coming from within the school staff. However, in 2007 the Prime Minister launched an initiative – London Challenge – with the vision of giving more youngsters from State Schools the opportunity to become members of the CCF within a neighbouring school. Six state schools in London trialled the scheme in 2008 and a further six, also in London, in 2009. There are now over 30 CCF contingents in Private and State schools across London with GL RFCA having the responsibility for maintaining the security of the ranges and armouries. Funding permitting, London Challenge will go national in 2010.
