The ultimate competition to find London’s most able team of analysts hosted by HSBC UK in association with RFCA for Greater London.
This year, HSBC UK hosted the Intelligence Challenge 2024, designed and run by 3 Military Intelligence Battalion. 10 teams competed under the guidance of a Military Intelligence Operator; they were taught military analysis skills which enable problem-solving under time constraints.
The Teams
• Aldermore Bank
• BNY Mellon (2 teams)
• HSBC UK
• KPMG
• M&C Saatchi World Services
• Moody’s
• PA Consulting
• Worshipful Company of Security Professionals
• Zurich
The Challenge
Your organisation is working to identify and counter a malign group when you suspect your operation has been compromised. Due to the time-sensitive nature of the target, an ad hoc team will be hastily assembled to review the available intelligence and operational data. In two hours you will need to brief the task force command board on your evaluation of the malign group and an assessment of where, if anywhere, a second operation might disrupt the network.
Who won?
We would like to thank the teams that took part in this challenge, we hope this gave them an insight in to how military skills are transferable.
The event was attended by General Sir Jim Hockenhull KBE ADC Gen, Commander UK Strategic Command & Chief of Defence Intelligence who awarded the winners and the runner-up.
Every participating team performed well but the 3MI’s Intelligence Challenge Trophy 2024 went to Moody’s followed by BNY Mellon’s team two who came in second.
The worshipful company of security professionals received a special mention for being the youngest team to participate and still performing better than most.
A huge congratulations to Moody’s!
The event, kindly hosted by HSBC UK at their Canary Wharf Office in London was attended by VIP’s from the participating organisations as well as VIP’s from organisations that are keen to do more with UK Defence. This event provided a great opportunity for employers to understand and learn more about the Armed Forces and Reservists and how they can support them.
“It’s great for HSBC to collaborate across boundaries and play a part in supporting the military deliver such an interactive activity to allow all the participants to demonstrate leadership and efficient decision-making to reach successful outcomes.
“The analytical skills to solve and overcome challenges exercised by all the teams today resonate so well with their day jobs which span across different business areas.”
“We had such a great response rate from HSBC colleagues volunteering to participate – this event offers an inclusive and accessible insight into the many skills used in the military that translate so well into the corporate world. Especially with all participants having no prior military exposure, it’s a real testament that brining an open mind and enthusiasm is the cornerstone of effective team performance, both in the military and in our corporate jobs.
“As a serving Reservist, I am especially grateful for our colleagues being truly motivated to learn more about the military – that brings real purpose to what we do as an Employee Resource Group, both within HSBC, as well as our close inter-firm collaboration across the City.”
“We are delighted to host this innovative and immersive engagement event for a second time, especially as we truly believe in the value of showcasing the transferable skills between Defence and Industry.
“We continue to strive to be an exemplar to other firms in valuing diversity as HSBC is proud to have been a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant for more than 10 years, earning and being re-validated with our Gold award in the Employer Recognition Scheme.”
